Today is the big day! After a night of restless sleep, we all got up around 6 AM and headed to the hospital by 7 AM. We checked in and, after a short wait, headed back to pre-op. We met with the nurse, Dr. Funk (anesthesiologist), and Dr. Gunson. Chris has a great team of people working on him today, and for that we are very thankful. Dr. Funk began his IV, which apparently was less painful than a blood draw Chris had in his hand when he donated peripheral blood stem cells. They dressed him in compression stockings to reduce the chance of blood clots - he was very stylish! :) They recorded his blood pressure and oxygen level (he was very proud that he was at 100%) and gave him some anti-nausea medicine. Then around 8:30 AM they wheeled him back to the operating room.
Dr. Gunson expects the surgery to take 6-7 hours, so for now we wait. We're sending lots of prayers and positive thoughts his way and to his surgical team and hoping for the best possible outcome!
